Module 1.3 Flashcards
what are devices connected externally to a computer called?
peripherals
describe input as instructions
Program;
• Set of instructions loaded into memory when you run the program
Commands:
• Given by user (e.g. you click on the Font Size command)
User responses:
• To a question ‘asked’ by a program
what is the F1 key used for?
help screen on the program you’re working on
how do you find your screen capture after pressing Print Screen key?
first go into paint and press control V to paste the image
what is a clipboard?
are in memory where text and other objects that have been copied temporarily are stored
they’re kept there until pasted somewhere or until program is closed or computer is shut down
Useful shortcuts: F1 Esc Windows key (•), Help Cancel choices File Explorer Desktop
hjhhhh
what are ports?
sockets used to connect peripherals to the computer
what’s plug-and-play?
operating system automatically detects and configures a device plugged into the computer, so the device can be used almost immediately.
what are the advantages and disadvantages of wireless devices?
ADVANTAGES:
• Less clutter
• Wide range for movement
DISADVANTAGES:
• easily removable - can be stolen easily
• require batteries
• interference can make then stop temporarily
• more expensive
what does resolution mean?
number of pixels used to form screen image
how are the size and quality of a image displayed? what’s the main thing responsible for it?
graphics card - specialized circuitry
what are other names for graphics card?
- video card
- graphics adapter
- display card
- display adapter
what does response time entail?
the time it takes a pixel to change from one colour to another
name ways to connect monitors
• VGA ( old way)
- HDMI ( high definition multimedia interface )
- DisplayPort
- Thunderbolt
• USB ( specialized monitor )
describe the difference between inkjet and laser printers
inkjet:
- spray microscopic dots of ink
- relatively cheap
- ink cartridges -> cheaper than laser cartridges but need to be replaced more frequently
- produce good quality
- slightly slower than laser
laser:
- toner instead of ink
- more expensive
- cheaper to run when printing large volumes
- print faster
how are printers normally installed?
USB ports
how do we change the default printer?
- > Go to the Control Panel or Settings via Start Menu
- > Locate the Printer option to see which printers are installed
LOOK FOR GREEN TICK THEN CHANGE
printer queues
control panel/ settings
temporarily stored on hard drive until printer is ready to print
Distinguish between a storage device and storage medium
DEVICE: CD/ DVD-drive
• computer hardware that read from and write to storage media are the storage devices, aka drives
MEDIUM: DVD/CD
• actual physical material or objects on which we store the data and programs are storage media
storage capacities
1 kilobyte (KB) = 1024 bytes 1 megabyte (MB) = 1024 KB 1 gigabyte (GB) = 1024 MB 1 terabyte (TB) = 1024 GB
describe hard drives in a case
- stores all programs and data
* measured in GB or TB
describe portable hard drives
- USB connected
* gets power from PC
describe flash drives
- cheap storage devices
- “removable disk”
- use electronic memory to store data
- powered by USB port
what is RSI & how can we prevent it?
repetitive strain injury
from fast repetitive actions
use ergonomically designed keyboards
what’s ergonomics?
study and design of the workplace and the equipment used in the workplace for comfort and safety
name some health tips for using computers
- Use ergonomically designed equipment
- Sit correctly
- Adjust height of seat and table
- Lighting must be adequate
- Ventilation / air circulation must be adequate
- Mouse and keyboard must be in easy reach
- Monitor at correct level and distance from eyes
- Turn eyes away from monitor every now and then
- Take regular breaks
what’s green computing?
term used to describe using computers in a way that is sensitive to the environment
how can we practice green computing?
∙ Switch off computers and devices you are not using
∙ Avoid wasting paper – proofread before you print, print ‘2 on 1’, etc.
∙ Try to repair or upgrade old or broken hardware
∙ Recycle or return used ink and toner cartridges
∙ Consider refilling and reusing ink and toner cartridges
what is e-waste?
e-scrap
outdated or broken electronic equipment; get dumped in landfills and contain toxic chemicals and materials
