Module 1.2 - Plate Movements Flashcards
Explain divergent boundaries
two tectonic plates moving away from each other, as they pull away hot molten can rise up this newly formed pathway to the surface creating new crust
What landforms are created with divergent boundaries
rifts - deep cracks in the crust between to diverged tectonic plates
mid ocean ridge - magma that has cooled after coming out of the rift in a ride like form
Explain convergent boundaries (continental/continental)
when two continental plates collide they are pushed upwards in a fold like mountain shape because the plates share similar densities
What landforms are created with convergent boundaries c/c
fold mountains as a result of pushing together
Explain convergent boundaries (oceanic/continental)
when oceanic crust is colliding with continental crust the denser crust (oceanic) sinks and subducts under the continental
What landforms are created with convergent boundaries c/o
fold mountains - when plates collide the crust crumples upwards
trench - where oceanic subducts underneath continental a deep depression in the ocean floor is formed
Explain convergent boundaries (oceanic/oceanic)
when two oceanic plates collide the faster moving one subducts (is forced underneath crust into mantle and is destroyed)
What landforms are created with convergent boundaries o/o
island arc- the subducted plate melts and is destroyed forming magma which rises to the surface creating a chain of volcanic island which are island arcs
Explain tranforming boundaries
where two plates are sliding parallel to each other but in opposite directions
What landforms are created with tranforming boundaries
earthquake - plates move very slowly but can sometimes slip quickly therefore creating eathquake tremors
fault lines- cracks in rock parallel to each other caused by plate movements
