Module 12 - Care Ethics Flashcards

Bridge Statement: an act is right iff the act develops caring relationships
Carol Gilligan
1936 - present. american psychologist. developed care ethics
aim of care ethics
replace harmful masculine values (which are endorsed by other ethical theories) with beneficial feminine values (endorsed by care ethics)
masculine ethical theories value (4), according to care ethcis
- universalism (generalized moral judgements),
- rationality (moral standards should function independently of the moral agent),
- neutrality (moral agent should be impartial in making moral judgements),
- justice (moral judgements should be exceptionless)
How masculine values should be replaced by feminine values
- universalism –> particularism (unique situations)
- rationality –> emotions (feelings matter in moral decisions)
3.neutrality –> relationships (connections btwn involved should matter) - Justice –> care (moral standard should be relationships, not objectivity)
“Care” definition in Care Ethics
relational (2+ppl), mutual (voluntary relationship), transformative (ppl changed for better in relationship), active (ppl must participate for relationship to succeed), and normative (caring relationships are the kind of relationships ppl should pursue)
Theoretical Criticism of Care Ethics
the rejection of justice (not fair) and particularism (cant make general statements about future) makes moral judgements impossible
some argue that Practical Criticism of Care Ethics
it replaces paternalism with maternalism (refers to how you treat someone with how you would treat a child)
