What is intimate partner Violence?
actual or threatened physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, or stalking abuse by an intimate partner
Economic Coercion
It can be a former spouse, non-marital partner like boyfriend/girlfriend
What are the three stages of intimate partner violence?
Phase 1: increasing tension, women has to keep partner calm
phase 2: period of acute battering, sexual abuse, psychological-threats, isolation from family and friends
phase 3: period of calm, partner shows behaviours that exhibit remorse and offer the women hope
How do you screen a pregnant women for intimate partner violence?
all pregnant women must be screened for IPV, you must screen the patient when they are alone without the partner
Please list four screening tools available for domestic violence
- WAST
- HITS
- IPV questionnaire
- Abuse assessment screen
What is the percentage of child abuse in families where partner abuse occurs?
25-50%
When is a victim of domestic violence most at risk for homicide?
When they attempt to leave home or following separation
What is the IV Medication of MAID?
IV medication includes:
Midazolam 10mg,
Propofol 1000mg,
Rocuronuim 200mg or Cisatracurium 40mg
What are the oral medications of MAID?
- an antiemetic 1 hour prior
-1st line: Secobarbital 15g PO
-2nd line: DDMP2 - Phenobarbital, chloral hydrate and morphine
If a patient requests MAID, but they do not qualify do you still have to report it?
Yes, you must report all requests for MAID to the government
There are several criteria required for a patient to be eidgible for MAID, please list them
(there are a few so, i only included the ones that I thought I would forget)
PS they must meet all the criteria
- 18 or older and has decision making capability
- Has serious incurable illness, disease, or disability
- is in an advance state of irreversible decline in capability
- Is elidgible for publically funded healthcare
- Is enduring intolerable physical/psychological suffering that cannot be alleviated under conditions the person considers accepable
How soon after you administer MAID do you need to report it to the Cheif Coroner
immediatley
If you prescribe your patient a substance for self administration of MAID, when do you need to report it to health canada?
no earlier than 90 days, and no later than 120 days
If they die before that, you can report before hand
in cases where MAID is not provided and one of these outcomes occurs within 90 days of written MAID request:
- does not qualify
- dies from another cause other than maid
-withdrew consent
-patient is referred to another NP
when do you need to notify health canada?
within 30 days of the outcome
What is the 90-day assessment period with MAID?
for all patients whose natural death is NOT reasonably forseeable, it is required that a minimum of 90 days be taken for the assessment of patients eligibility
This timeline can be shortened by the clinician providing MAID, if both clinicians are of the opinion that the loss of the patients capacity to provide consent is less than 90 days, and imminent
When does the 90 day assessment period for MAID begin?
The 90-day period begins on the day of the patient’s first MAID eligibility
criteria assessment
(e.g. the day on which the Clinician first considers or
reflects on information that forms part of a MAID assessment, such as
reviewing the patient’s file or meeting with the patient).
