Module 12: Administration of Medication via Inhalation Route Flashcards
1
Q
Assessment to be done before inhalation medication administration
A
- Assess respiratory pattern
- Auscultate breath sounds
- Assess ability to hold/manipulate canister
- Assess strength of inhalation
- Assess readiness/ability to learn
- Assess knowledge/understanding of the disease
- Determine med schedule and # of inhalations prescribed
2
Q
Assessment to be done after inhalation medication administration
A
- Instruct pt to clean inhaler
- Rinse mouth after use
- Wait 20-30 seconds between inhalations if multiple are needed
- After inhalation hold breath for 10 seconds if able to
- Ask if pt has any questions
- Ask pt to explain how to use med and medication schedule back to you
- Ask pt to calculate how many days inhaler will last depending on med schedule
- Assess respiratory status (RR, auscultation, SP02)
3
Q
MDI
A
- Delivers a measured dose of medication with each push of canister
- Are either squeeze and breathe inhalers or activated by pts breath
4
Q
MDI with Spacer
A
- MDI’s can be used with a spacer (Recommended)
- Spacer allows the particles of medication to slow down and break into smaller pieces which improves drugs absorption
- Are especially helpful for children and patients that have difficulty self-administrating
- Spacers are equipped with a mask for children 4 years or younger
5
Q
Diskus Inhalers
A
- A flat, round device that is used to deliver asthma medicines in powder form
- Has a dose counter window so you can see how many doses are left.
6
Q
Drug Administered via Diskus
A
- Advair (purple)
- Ventolin
- Flovent
- Serevent
7
Q
Drug Administered via MDI
A
Ventolin
Flovent
Alvesco
8
Q
HandiHaler
A
- Consists of a plastic device to inhale medication. A capsule of powdered medication is placed in the device
- Is breath activated, which means when you inhale, the HandiHaler automatically releases the medication.
9
Q
Drugs Administered via HandiHaler
A
Spiriva
10
Q
Turbuhaler
A
- Is a dry-powder inhaler
- Some contain a dose counter
- Check for a red indicator in the windows on the side of the device. When you see red in the window, there are approximately 20 doses left

12
Q
How to determine if MDI/DPI is empty
A
- Divide capacity of container by number of doses pt takes
- DO NOT FLOAT INHALER
13
Q
Delivery Devices – Inhalers
A
- Metered-dose inhalers (MDI’s)
- DPI’s
14
Q
Nebulizers
A
Liquid medication that is vaporized into a fine mist which is then inhaled through a mask or handheld device
