Module 12 Flashcards
Define tumor
The collective growth of the abnormal cells
Define Ca
Uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body
There are 2 types of tumors. Name them
Malignant- cancerous, Begnin- cancer free
What is secondary Ca?
The other organs that the Ca is spread to
Primary Ca
Originating site
Metastasis
Spread of Ca
List risk factors for Ca
Smoking, genetics, environment, diet, chemicals, radiation, alcohol abuse, ETOH (ethoalcohol), substance misuse, hormones, viruses (hpv)
Name the 4 characteristics for changes in a mole
A- asymmetry, B-border, C-color, D- diameter
Define Chemotherapy
A powerful drug that kills off cancer cells. Can be given thru IV or orally
What is the purpose of doing surgery for a pt with Ca?
Surgery is used to remove the tumor, tissue and the lymphnodes
Explain radiation
A bullseye is drawn on a pt and they are put in a room on their own. The pt must stand still and then a radioactive beam is directed at the tumor. The radiation beam breaks down the tumor.
List 3 forms of biological treatments.
Bone marrow, stem cell and immuno therapy (natural things to boost immunity)
List top 7 warning signs of Ca
Lump, changes in a mole, dysphasia, nagging cough, changes in bowel/bladder, sores that do not heal, unusual bleeding or discharge
