Module #11: Chemical Kinetics Flashcards
What is the reaction rate equation that has units of M/sec?
R = Delta[product]/Delta t = - {Delta[reactants]/Delta t}
What is the rate equation for a chemical reaction?
R = k x [A]^x x [B]^y
R is the rate of the equation, k is the rate constant, and x and y are exponents which do not necessarily relate to anything in the equation.
First order reactions only, what is the equation for the half lives of reactions?
t1/2 = 0.693/k
What is the equation for most second order equations?
1/[A] - 1/[A]o = k x t
Elementary reaction
A reaction that contains only one step: a direct collision between all reactants in the reaction
What is special about elementary reactions?
For elementary reactions only, the exponents in the rate equation are equal to the stoichiometric coefficients of the chemical reaction
