Erythrocytes
Red blood cells that carry the oxygen in blood.
Leukocytes
White blood cells that perform various defensive functions in blood.
Platelets
Cell fragments in blood that help prevent blood loss.
Hemopoiesis
The process by which the formed elements of blood are made in the body.
Systolic Phase
The phase of the cardiac cycle in which the ventricles contract.
Diastolic Phase
The phase of the cardiac cycle in which the ventricles relax.
Arterioles
The smallest arteries that still have three tunics.
Venules
Small veins that do not have three tunics but instead have only an endothelium, a basement membrane, and a few smooth muscle cells.
Platelet
Cell fragment in blood which helps prevent blood loss.
Basophil
Cell that releases histamine and heparin.
Erythrocyte
Cell that carries oxygen in the blood.
Eosinophil
Cell that fights inflammation.
Monocyte
Agranulocyte that fights infections by phagocytosis.
Neutrophil
Granulocyte that fights infections by phagocytosis.
Lymphocyte
Cell that produces antibodies.
