Leadership Identity
Degree to which individuals think of themselves as leaders
social identity theory
person’s knowledge and/or perception that he or she belongs to a specific social group
identity theory
accent is on self-categorization and role based.
your social identity includes the view of yourself that emerges from the reflexive activity of self-categorization
Ways to Develop Leadership Identity
elf-development, group influences, changing your view of self with others, and broadening your view of leadership.
Six stages of Leadership Identity
Stage 1: Awareness = recognize leaders exist in a group setting.
Stage 2: Exploration/Engagement = willingly gets involved in takes on leadership or responsibility
Stage 3: Leader Identified = In this leader-centric stage, one is a leader only if he or she occupies a formal position of leadership.
Stage 4: Leadership Differentiated = group members differentiate leadership beyond the role held by the formal, designated and formal leaders commit to engaging other group members by inviting them to participate and share responsibility
Stage 5: Generativity = group members become committed to the larger purposes of the group and are passionate about their work. This passion and enthusiasm is associated with the beliefs and values that are important to group members.
Stage 6: Integration/Synthesis =group members develop continual, active engagement in leadership as a regular process—and, hence, as a part of leadership self-identity
