Q

Peripheral Nervous System

A

Gathers information and transmits info to the CNS. It also transmits decisions from the CNS to body parts

Q

Sympathetic Nervous System

A

Aroused and excites or expends energy. (Fight or flight)

Causes heart rate to accelerate, blood pressure, sweat, makes you exceedingly alert

Q

Neural Network

A

The brain is subdivided into clusters of neurons which are specialized in certain things. Learning sometimes strengthens the connections between various neural network

Q

What happens when one touches a flame?

A

The sensory neurons send an impulse back to the spinal cord where interneurons process and respond by activating motor neurons back towards your hand.

Q

Upper spinal cord injury

A

Of the very top of the spinal cord is injured, thus preventing the spinal cord to interact with the brain, when sensory neurons activate and send impulses to the spinal cord, one would exhibit reflexive reactions because the spinal cord is responsible for automatic response. However, one would not be able to feel anything or make the conscious decision to move because the sense of feeling (pain or pleasure) is governed by the brain

Q

Hormones

A

Chemical messengers that are manufactured by endocrine glands and travel through the blood stream to affect other tissue

Q

Compare Nervous System to Endocrine System

A

NERVOUS SYSTEM- neurotransmitters are speedily released through nerve cell’s and bind to receptor sites (quick momentary response)
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM- hormones slowly drug through the blood to impact receptor sites (long reaction time but also longer lasting effect on body)

16
Q

Adrenal Glands

A

On top of kidney, release hormones which increase heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar, increase energy in fight or flight response

17
Q

Pituitary Gland

A

Located in the core of the brain and controlled by the adjacent HYPOTHALAMUS. Stimulates growth and physical development. Also releases hormones (Oxytocin) related to various contractions and social bonding
It also triggers sex glands to activate

18
Q

Pituitary Feedback system

A

Brain—> pituitary—> other glands—> hormones—> body and brain

An example of the nervous system and endocrine system working in tandem
