Module 10- Nervous system Flashcards
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Brain and spinal cord, the body’s decision makers. Revives info from the PNS
Peripheral Nervous System
Gathers information and transmits info to the CNS. It also transmits decisions from the CNS to body parts
Sensory Neurons
Carry messages from the body’s tissues and sensory receptors inwards to the CNS.
Motor Neurons
Carry instructions from the CNS outward to body parts
Interneueons
Neurons within the brain and spinal cord which communicate internally and process information
Somatic Nervous System
Part of the PNS and enables voluntary control of our skeletal muscles
Autonomous Nervous System
Controls glands, internal organs, heartbeat.
Sympathetic Nervous System
Aroused and excites or expends energy. (Fight or flight)
Causes heart rate to accelerate, blood pressure, sweat, makes you exceedingly alert
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Conserved energy, relaxes, opposite of sympathetic NS.
Neural Network
The brain is subdivided into clusters of neurons which are specialized in certain things. Learning sometimes strengthens the connections between various neural network
What happens when one touches a flame?
The sensory neurons send an impulse back to the spinal cord where interneurons process and respond by activating motor neurons back towards your hand.
Upper spinal cord injury
Of the very top of the spinal cord is injured, thus preventing the spinal cord to interact with the brain, when sensory neurons activate and send impulses to the spinal cord, one would exhibit reflexive reactions because the spinal cord is responsible for automatic response. However, one would not be able to feel anything or make the conscious decision to move because the sense of feeling (pain or pleasure) is governed by the brain
The endocrine system
The body’s SLOW CHEMICAL communication system, a set of glands that secrete HORMONES into the BLOOD STREAM
Hormones
Chemical messengers that are manufactured by endocrine glands and travel through the blood stream to affect other tissue
Compare Nervous System to Endocrine System
NERVOUS SYSTEM- neurotransmitters are speedily released through nerve cell’s and bind to receptor sites (quick momentary response)
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM- hormones slowly drug through the blood to impact receptor sites (long reaction time but also longer lasting effect on body)
