1b. What is the nature of how many and the private/public nature of how juveniles are incarcerated in the US?
60% are private and only take a handful (27,000)
60-70% are public and take a large number (64,000)
1c. What jurisdictions have the highest numbers and rates of juveniles in detention?
Cali has the highest number in custody followed by florida
District of Columbia has the highest rate followed by Wyoming
1d. What are the racial and gender make-ups of these correctional populations.
Females make up 13-15% , males make up 85%
-Blacks have the highest custody
Thompson v Oklahoma (1988)
An offender who is 15 at the time of the crime can not be executed do to the 8th amendment clause against cruel and unusual punishment
Stanford v. Kentucky (1989)
Individuals 16 or older at the time of the offense could be sentenced to death in the US
Roper v. Simmons (2005)
The court ruled that capital punishment was no longer a legal punishment
