Module 1: Variations in Plants and Animals & Human Genetic Variation Flashcards
What is the biological species concept?
species are a group of populations that can interbreed
what are the components of natural selection?
variation, competition, adaptation, selection
what refers to differences in traits?
variation
what are inherited variation? and give 5 examples.
it is genetically controlled, results from activity of genes. it cannot be altered.
ex. hair & skin color, blood grp, fingerprint, and sex
what are acquired variations? and give 5 examples
results from individuals nutrition and activities.
ex. language proficiency, athletic skills, body build, obesity, sun tan
what is discontinuous variation
entirely genetically controlled, cannot be altered by external conditions
ex. abo blood group, genetic defects
what is continuous variation
influenced by genes AND environment. there is a range of phenotypes between two extremes
ex. shade of hair color, height weight
give the human genetic variations and give description for each
morphological: seen in cellular and subcellular environment. seen in anatomical and structural features
physiological: includes functional aspects
behavioral: includes attitude and behavior
sexual: primary- differences of reproductive organ, secondary- traits related to mating
pedigree
a chart used to study the pattern of inheritance of a specific trait
