L1 learner/learning
- Generally immersed in language at all times from birth.
- Wants, needs, is motivated to communicate by signs or baby words
- Adults often praise and encourage the child’s use of language urging them.
- Gets a lot of attention to aid the learning.
- Learners by playing and experimenting with new language and lots of time to do so.
- Not often corrected
L2 learner/learning
- Not intensively exposed to L2
- Most often exposed by being taught the English language.
- May not be motivated but could be taught.
- Often only learns through interaction with a teacher and classmate.
- Teachers regularly correct learners for accuracy and meaning.
Language learning often used for
Formal study of language. Language form included grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary.
The term language acquisition is used for
Language that is “picked up”
As a teacher you can teach both

Acquisition activities examples
Role playing, phone conversation, giving directions, stop video at a specific point and ask what will she do next.
*These activities require students to interact, negotiate meaning. I exchange information as if “picking up” English in everyday life.
