Module 1 - Professional issues and transition to practice Flashcards
What are professional boundaries?
Professional boundaries are considered to be the space between nurses’ power and patient vulnerability.
What are the 3 types of professional boundaries?
Physical, mental, emotional.
Physical - refers to how and where we touch our patients or the size of their personal space.
Mental - refers to the patients ability to learn and process information.
Emotional - the patient’s self esteem and emotional stability are involved.
How nurses interact may enhance or reduce the clarity of these boundaries.
What kinds of Knowledge are held to be of most value in the discipline of nursing?
Empirics: The Science of nursing. Observation and recording, problem solving and logical reasoning, theory development, offering a possible explanation followed by hypotheses testing.
Ethics: The Moral Component of Knowledge in Nursing. What ought to be done, confronting and resolving conflicting values, norms, interests or principles, following nursing’s ethical codes, is this right, is this responsible?
Personal Knowing in Nursing: Insight in self, and perceived by others as authentic, and genuine, comes from deep reflection and through encounters with others
Aesthetics: The Art of Nursing. Involves a deep appreciation of the meaning of a situation, may be seen in the nurse’s conduct, attitudes, and interactions with others, or it may be expressed without words and the encounter transforms the experience and encounter.
What are the two types of reflection?
In action: can be seen as a more dynamic process of considering current professional practice as it occurs, and developing a deeper understanding of it.
On action: refers to a retrospective activity, where you look back on and evaluate current skills, competencies, knowledge and professional practice.
