Module 1 Pathophysiology Terms Flashcards
Biopsy
Excision of a small amount of living tissue
Autopsy
Examination of the body and organs after death
Gross level
Can refer to the organ level or system level of organization
Microscopic Level
Refers to the cellular level
Pathophysiology can be studied on 3 “levels.” What are they?
Gross, Microscopic, Molecular
Pathogenesis
Development of a disease
Acute Disease
Develops quickly, has marked signs and is short term
Chronic Disease
Usually milder than acute disease, gradual development, long duration
Subclinical State
pathological manifestations occur but there are no obvious manifestations
Incubation period
Time between exposure and onset of signs/symptoms
Prodromal perios
Early development of a disease, signs are often nonspecific or completely absent
Manifestations
Signs and symptoms
Syndrome
A collection of signs and symptoms; often affects more than one organ
Remissions
Periods of time when the manifestations of a disease subside or become absent
Precipitating factor
A condition that triggers an acute episode
Therapy
Treatment measures taken to promote recovery or slow the progress of a disease
Sequelae
Secondary outcomes of a primary condition (shingles for former varicella virus patients)
Convalescence
Period of recovery
Prognosis
Probability for recovery or for other outcomes
Rehabilitation
Maximizing the function of diseased tissue
Epidemiology
The science of identifying causative factors and tracking the pattern/occurence of diseases.
Morbidity
Indicates the number of people with a disease within a group
Mortality
Indicates the number of deaths resulting from a particular disease within a group
Epidemics
The occurrence of a higher than expected number of cases of an infectious disease in a given area.
Pandemics
A higher than expected number of cases of an infectious disease in many regions of the globe
Occurrence (of a disease)
A method of measuring the severity of a disease outbreak using its incidence and prevelance
Incidence
Number of new cases in a given population within a specified period of time
Prevalence
Number of new and old or existing cases in a specific population within a specified time period.
