Module 1 Lesson 1 Flashcards
CoL: Made up of 1 or more cells
cells are the basic unit of structure in all living things
ex. Bacterium in Unicellular
Humans and Plants are Multicellular
CoL: Displays Organization
ex. Organ systems working together to support an organism
Living things display Organization
CoL: Growth and Development
Growth results in an increase in mass
Development results in different abilities
ex. Human grows and becomes taller and heavier
Human develops and can jump higher and run faster
CoL: Reproduction
Organisms reproduce to pass on traits from generation to generation
ex. Humans sexually reproduce
CoL: Response to Stimuli
Reactions to internal and external stimuli are called responses
ex. House plant away from light next to a window will shift itself slowly towards the light
CoL: Requires Energy
All forms of life need energy
gained through the energy from the light of the sun to make themselves food. Could also take energy from chemical compounds. Some gain energy by consuming other organisms
ex. Animals hunt other animals for energy
CoL: Maintains Homeostasis
All organisms keep themselves in a stable state through the process of homeostasis. Homeostasis is regulated and maintained at all levels of the organization. If not maintained could result in death
ex. Humans use homeostasis to maintain a stable body temperature
CoL: Adaptations/Evolves over time
Inherited changes over time to help species survive over time
ex. Animals fur who are living in colder climates
Biology
science of life; examines how living things interact, how systems function, and how they function at a molecular level.
Organism
anything that has or once had all the characteristics of life.
Growth
process that results in mass being added to an organism; may include formation of new cells and new structures.
Development
changes an organism undergoes in its lifetime before reaching its adult form.
Reproduction
production of offspring.
Species
group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring (biological species concept).
stimulus
any change in an organism’s internal or external environment that causes the organism to react.
