Module 1 Lecture 5: Extinction and Punishment Flashcards
Extinction
A decrease in behavior following the occurrence of the behavior in the absence of reinforcement (decreased future probability).
- Not generally used alone; does not teach an alternative skill.
Extinction Burst
When a behavior is not reinforced, a temporary burst in behavior may occur. These behaviors will increase in frequency, variability, and emotional typography.
Spontaneous Recovery
A sudden return of a behavior following extinction.
Punishment
When a stimulus even occurs following a behavior, resulting in a decrease in future dimensions of similar behavior.
- Can be automatic (AP+, AP-) or social (SP+, SP-)
Positive Punishment (P+)
The addition of a stimulus event after a behavior that decreases future dimensions of similar behavior.
Negative Punishment (P-)
The removal of a stimulus event after a behavior that decreases future dimensions of similar behavior.
Unconditioned/Primary Punishers
Require no learning history to be effective. E.g., pain, shock, dizziness, etc.
Conditioned/Secondary Punishers
Result of a learning history
