What are some of the purposes for which an interview is conducted?
Broad information gathering, establishing and building rapport with a client.
What happens in the opening phase of an interview (1 of 3 stgs)?
Introduce yourself, establish ground rules (not taking, time limit etc), confidentiality+informed consent, build rapport, begin asking questions.
What happens in the info-gathering stage (2/3)?
Ask questions about a wide range of topics, including more confronting ones.
Developing themes and establish key problem areas
What happens in the closure phase (3/3)?
Begin to wind down, assist in regaining composure if needed, summary, ask if they have any Q’s, reassurance and hope, homework, schedule future sessions.
What are some rapport-building techniques?
- Commonality: finding something in common
- Emotional mirroring: empathise, understand
- Posture mirroring
- Tone and tempo match
- Non judgemental attitude
- inviting behaviour
What are some methods of active listening?
Body language: upright, leaning in slightly
- Focused attention, not looking elsewhere
- Being comfortable in the silence, not rushing things
What is reflection (think an example)?
Encouraging emotional expression through empathy: “I can imagine why you’d feel that way”
What is clarifying (think of example)?
Verifying accuracy through questioning: “So it was his actions that led you to be confused?”
What is paraphrasing (think of example)?
Repeating content of speech: “This has made you feel betrayed because he would say that to you”
What are the verbal active listening skills?
Summarising, paraphrasing, clarifying, reflecting
What are the main 2 types of questions?
Open ended: required an elaborate answer
Closed ended: requires a succinct and often yes/no answer.
What are some adjustments for telehealth interviewing?
-emphasising verbal and non verbal gestures
- clarify facial expressions and body language
