FORMALITY

Should be use when writing or speaking to an unknown audience
FORMAL
[LEVEL OF FORMALITY]
Allowed to be used when writing or speaking to an individual that is well known to him/her
SEMI-FORMAL
[LEVEL OF FORMALITY]
Has no place or should not be used in academic or professional writing
INFORMAL
a position that focuses on and is informed by research and reasoning rather than personal feelings and opinions.
- if readers suspect that your are trying to manipulate peoples opinions about an issue, then they’ll doubt the validity of the entire document/statement.
OBJECTIVITY
3 things you should avoid to ensure objectivity
1.PERSONAL LANGUAGE- only support for the development of the main idea, it should not be the main idea itself
- EMOTIVE LANGUAGE- attempts to stir emotion of the audience through exaggeration & superlatives
- JUDGEMENTAL LANGUAGE- shows personal judgementof the writer or speaker. Held beliefs rather than through rrl
- uses clear and direct language
-stays away from figurative language
EXPLICITNESS
- use of linguistic devices to express hesitation or uncertainty
- to demonstrate politeness and indirectness
HEDGING
WHY PEOPLE USE HEDGED LANGUAGE
- Minimize the possibility of another academic opposing the claims
-to show acknowledgement that there may be flaws in their claims
