Module 1 - Functional Anatomy of the Heart Flashcards
Position of heart in the chest
Middle mediastinum
anterior to thoracic vertebrae T5-T8
posterior to sternum
rests on central tendon of the diaphragm
Cardiac knotch
The ventricle displaces the left lung, pushing it to the left. This creates the cardiac knotch
Three Surfaces of the Heart:
Diaphragmic
formed by the two ventricles where they rest on the central tendon of the diaphragm
apex extends to 5th intercostal space
Three Surfaces of the Heart:
Posterior
consists of the two atria, primarily the left
Three Surfaces of the Heart:
Sternocostal
Consists of right atrium and right ventricle
Four Borders of the Heart:
Right Border
Right atrium, approximately in line with SVC and IVC
Four Borders of the Heart:
Inferior Border
extends along 6th costal cartilage and xiphisternal joint
terminates at apex in midclavicular line
right ventricle and tip of left ventricle
Four Borders of the Heart:
Left Border
outlined by left ventricle and left atrial appendage
Four Borders of the Heart:
Superior Border
begins at 2nd intercostal space on left, and 3rd costal space on the right
marks the origin of the aorta and the pulmonary trunk and the termination of the superior vena cava
Fibrous annulus
divides atria from ventricles
