Module 1 Forming Flashcards
What are the 6 types of manufacturing?
- Forming
- Casting
- Molding
- Joining
- Machining
- Additive
What to consider when selecting a process?
- Material
- Object Geometry
- Number of Parts
- Tools
- Cost
- Automation
What is forming?
the process of applying a force and plastically deforming the material into a shape.
Eg: Forging, rolling, Extrusion
What is casting?
The pouring of material into a mold and allowing it to solidify.
Eg: Die cast, Sand cast, investment cast
What is molding?
The shaping of a liquid or pliable material using a mold.
Eg: Injection, compresssion, blow
What is machining?
The use of a tool to remove exess material.
Eg: Drilling, Turning
What is Joining?
Combining multiple components into a larger assembly.
Eg: Welding, Nailing, soldering
What is Additive?
Adding material to build up another object.
Eg: 3D printing, Vat exposing
What are the Sub types of Forming?
Hot Working: Above recrystalisation temperature and easier to form
Cold Working: Below recrystalisation tempereture and has more strength.
