Module 1: education for sustainability Flashcards
What are UNESCO’s four independent pillars of sustainability?
Natural/biophysical - providing life supporting services (food, water, air) for all life.
Economic - providing continuing means of livelihood (money and employment)
Social - providing ways for people to live together peacefully, equitably, and respectfully
Political - exercises democratic power to make decisions about ways the economic and social systems use the natural (biophysical environment)
The Earth’s systems
The earth’s system is comprised of life - supporting systems; atmosphere (air), hydrosphere (water), lithosphere (land/earth), and biosphere. From these systems, humans obtain provisioning services (water, food, timbre and fibre), regulating services (floods, water quality, climate wastes etc.), cultural services (recreational, aesthetic, and spiritual beliefs), and supporting survives (nutrient recycling, photosynthesis, soil formation)
