opioid analgesics (especially meperidine)
corticosteroids
antihypertensives/cardiac drugs

psychoactive drugs (anxiolytics, hypnotics)

  1. confused
  2. target labs (CBC, CMP, phosphate)
  3. search of occult infection: CXR, UA
  4. consider ABG, EKG, LP, CT/MRI, Mg, B12, drug levels, tox screen, EEG

treatment of delirium

A
  • treat underlying medical problem: stop offending medications; identify & address other precipitants
  • use environmental interventions: reduce isolation & provide reassurance, re-estabolish normal stimulation & activities, promote rest periods & night time sleep, maximize safety
  • retrain or use low dose antipsychotics only when absolutely necessary
