Module 1 chpt 4,5,6 Flashcards
problem statement
articulate the nature, context, and significance of a problem include several components organized to form an argument for a new study
Theory of planned behaviour
- volition to perform behaviour
- intention based on attitude toward behaviour, subjective norms (social pressure), and perceived control
- importance of these factors varies
classical theory
abstract generalizations that explain how phemon are interrelated
descriptive theory
broad representation that throughly describe a phenom - QUALITATIVE research
Grand theory
macrotheroy that describes large segments of human experience
the whole of nursing, goals, mission statements
Middle-range theory
explain decision making, stress, comfort, unpleasant symptoms
more specific and amendable to empirical testing.
practical theory
microtheory; situation-specific
highly specific, narrow scope, action oriented
conceptual model
less formal than theory (concepts are building blocks of theory)
springboard for developing hypothesis but are NOT tested.
schematic model
visual representations of a theory - boxes with lines, helos with abstract thoughts to be visually easier to understand
framework
overall underpinnings of a study- the FRAME of the study - can be conceptual or theoretical
role of theories and models
- integrate observations and facts into orderly schemes
- guide research in WHAT and WHY
- basis for predicting phenom-provide direction and impetus
- springboard for advances
relationship btw theory and research
- reciprocal
- theories are build inductively from research and observations
- concepts and relationships are validated through research
- theory guides research, research validates theories to create building blocks for new theories
Roy’s adaptation model
humans are biophysical adaptive systems
nursing intervations manipulate stimuli that affect adaptation
Orem’s self care deficit theory
requires self-care activities to maintain life (air, water, food, elimination, activity/rest, solitude/social interaction, hazard prevention, promotion of normalcy)
patient need nursing care when their demands for self care outweigh their abilities
selecting a theory
- has the theory done a good job of explaining, predicting or describing constructs that are key to the research problem
- has it been applied to similar research problems?
- is it operational and do instruments exist?
- is it compatible with world view?
