Module 1 Flashcards
The purpose of transport
To move substances in and out of the cell either actively or passively
Diffusion
The movement of a substance from an area of high to low concentration
Facilitated diffusion
Channel proteins helping large substances cross the cell membrane
Osmosis
A form of diffusion involving water and a semi permeable membrane. Moves from low to high solute concentration
Active transport
Pumps solutes against a concentration gradient through ATP
Endocytosis
Cell takes in materials via the cell membrane
Exocytosis
Cell moves materials out via the cell membrane. Through intracellular vesicles fusing with the membrane
Prokaryotes
Small, low complexity cells which do not have membrane bound organelles
Example: Prokaryote
Bacteria and archea
Eukaryotes
Large, compartmentalised multicellular organisms.
Example: Eukaryotes
Animals, plants and fungi
Cell membrane
A semi permeable organelle forming a barrier around the cell
SA:V ratio
As a cell grows, the volume increases faster than the surface area
