Body 1 power and control
1984
Established through surveillance, propaganda, fear, censorship and brain washing.
“Big brother” represents Hitler, the party represents the Nazi party.
“Big brother is watching you” - fear and surveillance
Brainwashing youth lead to them betraying and turning in their parents by talking against the party, parallels with Nazi party
Oxymoron - “freedom is slavery, war is peace, ignorance is strength” - easily manipulated allows government to abuse it’s power.
Body 2 power and control
Metropolis
Power and control eatables via a social hierarchy, workers below and rich at the top - underground workers scene shows dystopia. Contrasted with the above ground utopia.
Context influenced as conservative elites at the top with the German public and workers at the bottom.
Music is sped up in beginning scene to show the frenzy and fear of the workers which shows the control and power
Body 3 resistance and rebellion
1984
Conformity is challenged when resistance and rebellion begins however it is ultimately futile.
Winston is the main instigator of this theme - attempts to destroy the party.
Seeks to uncover lies of the party.
His diary and relationship with Julia.
Hopes of rebellion destroyed by the ministry of truth (irony) stops him in room 101.
Body 4 resistance and rebellion
Metropolis
Context influences again - German revolution of 1919, poor living conditions (hyperinflation, debts) however the metropolis rebellion is successful, contrasted to 1984.
Maria is the driving force behind this theme.
Tower of Babel scene - Maria inspires the workers to rise up.
“Mediator between the hands and the head must be the heart” - head is joh frederson, hands is workers and heart is freder
Foreshadowing - “and if those rose in the depths one day rise against you?”
Essay structure
The context
1984 - published 1949, Rise of totalitarianism in Europe - Russia, Germany. Nazi rule just ended.
Metropolis - premiered 1927, Weimar Republic, political, economical crisis due to ww1 and Versailles.
