MODULE 1 Flashcards
is the quality that enables the soil to produce the proper compounds in the proper amounts and in the proper proportion, for the proper growth of specified kind of plants wrien all factors are favorabie for growth. It refers to une avallable nutrient status of the soul; physical, chemical and brological properties and other factors that affect nutrient availability and nutrient requirement of the crop.
Soil Fertility
___ is the capability of the soil to produce a specified plant under a specified system of management. For soil to be productive, it must necessary be fertile, but a fertile soil is not always a productive soil.
Soil Productivity
What are the Factors of Soil Fertility?
Favorable physical properties,
Favorable chemical properties,
Favorable microbiological properties,
Abundant and well balanced nutrient supply
What’s under the “Favorable physical properties”?
*good aeration and drainage
*proper moisture holding capacity
What’s under the “Favorable chemical properties”
*optimal reaction (pH)
*high buffer capacity
*high nutrient holding capacity
*absence of toxic materials
What’s under the “Favorable microbiological properties”?
> active functioning of beneficial organisms; fungi, bacteria and actinomycetes. Example are rhizobia, blue green algae,
, micorhizza, nitrobacter, nitrosomonas and oiner beneficial organisms
suppressed activity of harmfui organisms. Examples of harmful organisms are:
Rnizoctonia solani, Fusarium spp.
What’s under the “Abundant and well balanced nutrient supply”?
*macronutrients (N, P,K, Ca, MG, S)
*micronutrients (Zn, Cu, Mo, Mn, Fe, Cl, B, Va)
The ______ of soil can be regarded as the fertility status of these soil. In this connection, the physical, chemical and microbiological factors are the associated factors of limiting factors of soil fertility. The soil nutrients can exert their beneficial effect on the growing plants more efficiently if the associated factors are favorable.
nutrient supplying power
World population is enormousy increasing particularly in the third world countries while the area of arabie land per capita is continuously decreasing. It is apparent that more food and fiber must be produced from the same lands that are cultivated centuries ago. The addition of fertilizers, which contain the elements required for plant growth, together with sustainable cultural practices and soil fertility management, will permit the producers of food fibers meet these demands.
Importance of Soil Fertility
Sustainabie level of management is required if the greatest return is to be realized from the money spent on fertilizers and lime, and good management comes from understanding the principles of limiting growth factors and knowing how to manipulate them to advantage without consequent destruction to the soil resource.
