module 1 Flashcards
what are numerical variables
quantiative measurements that have magnitude and are associated with a numerical scale
commonly counts, dimensions, angles, rates or %
note numerical variables may be continuous or discrete
what are some examples of numerical data
height
weight
of kids
dosages
longevity in years
what are categorial variables
where data is a ‘member’ of a category in which qualitative characteristics are measured
not numerical measurements (only in terms of frequency)
what are some examples of categorical variables
sex
yes or no answers
favorite colour survey
genotypes
provinces
what is discrete data
measurements are collected in counts. values are indivisible
number of limbs
# of offspring
# of flower petals
what is continuous data
measurements are collected along a spectrum and all values can be infinitely divided
time
height
weight
age
temp
what are the types of categorical data
nominal scale
ordinal scale
what is nominal data
data that has no particular order and likely no distinct relationship to one another
independent categories
what is ordinal data
data by which can be organized by rank.
values have meaningful order, but the value in between the intervals may vary (finishing first vs second vs third in a race)
what are the types of numerical variables
interval scale
ratio scale
what is interval scale data
all values or categories have a meaning full order and a set interval value. The zero point is arbitrary () can technically be any value
temperature
time
years (BC and AB)
longitude and lattiutes
