Module 1 Flashcards
Define cognition
The acquisition and processing of sensory information about the world in order to make behavioral decisions
Twl broad reasons why people want to understand the mind and brain
Basic research: understand the world and its phenomena, without regard to a specific end-use of this knowledge.
Who are we? Why do we do the things we do?
Applied research: conducted with the goal of developping a useful product, tool, or solution to a problem.
Causes of disorders in order to develop potential interventions.
Human factors
A field of psychology concerned with applying scientific findings to the design of systems that people interact with.
Ex. A designer of a cockpit might want to know which kinds of displays are most easily read or attention grabbing
Applied research
Artificial intelligence
A brand of computer science and engineering that is concerned with building machines that can perform some of the tasks that humans can do-and perhaps some that we can’t as well
Neuroscience
The field of science concerned with the study of the brain and related physiological systems
Cognitive psychology
A field of psychology concerned with studying intelligence through the observation of behaviors
Ex. studying intelligence using behavioral experiment
Naturalistic observation
A research technique in which the behaviors of people or other organisms are observed as they occur in their natural environment, without any experimental intervention
Ex. Couting the number of people using computers in class and the number of times they participated. Then comparing rates to see if link between computer usage and class participation
Computational modeling
Simulating brain processes or functions using computer-based models.
Using machines to imitate cognitive processes
