Module 1 Flashcards
Define physiology
The study of function in living organisms
Define homeostasis
the maintenance of relatively stable conditions within the internal environment regardless of what is happening in the external environment
Describe negative feedback control systems
Set point changes, control center (nervous system) sends signal to effector organs to alter controlled variable, sensor/receptor will detect changes and react accordingly
List the levels of organization in the human body
atoms -> molecules -> macromolecules -> organelles -> cells -> tissues -> organs -> systems -> organism
Define internal environment
the fluid surrounding the cells in our body, consisting of the interstitial fluid and blood plasma
Define external environment
the region outside the body, including the space and contents of the digestive, respiratory, and urogenital tracts
Name some negative feedback examples
thermal regulation (body temp), hormones, blood pressure
Name some positive feedback examples
action potentials, labour contractions, breast milk production, LH surge (causes ovulation)
