Module 1 Flashcards
Statistics
a way of reasoning, along with a collection of tools and methods, designed to help us understand the world with the use of data
data
values with a context
measurable information
why we collect data?
find answers to questions that cannot be answered otherwise
study reasons for variability in an experiment
process of making a data driven decision (5 steps)
- research question
- experimental design
- draw sample
- describe and summarize the statistics
- make an inference
population of interest
the entire collection of individuals being studied
sample
subset of the population, selected for study in some prescribed manner.
parameter
a numerical summary that describes a characteristic of the population
use greek letters
a statistic
numerical summary that describes a characteristic of the sample
use latin letters
variables
characteristics recorded about each individual
categorical
qualitative
categories, names, etc. not numbers
numerical
quantitative
measurements, numbers
nominal
N-names
categories have no order
ordinal
O-order
categories have order (agree, strongly agree, etc.)
discrete
can only have distinct values (often whole numbers)
ex: shoe size
continuous
can be any value in a given interval
