Module 0: Overview of Obesity Flashcards
Economics of obesity (2 points)
-Medical costs
-Lost productivity
Obesity and life expectancy relationships
-Younger age of obesity development = greater impact on quality of life and life expectancy
-More obese = more years lost
Management of obesity in healthcare (3 points)
1.Lifestyle (diet, exercise)
2.Medical (orlistat, lorcaserin)
Surgical (bariatric surgery)
What do orlistat and lorcaserin do?
Orlistat: block lipid absorbtion in gut by inhibiting lipase enzyme
Lorcaserin: Appetite suppressant by activating POMC neurons in hypothalamus
Weight loss & weight gain relationships with cell number and size
Weight loss: decrease cell size/ maintain cell number
Weight gain: increase cell size and number
3 types of obesity
Caused mainly by genes (rare cases):
Monogenic and syndromic high efficacy treatment)
Caused by mainly environment, partly genes (common obesity):
Polygenic (mixed efficacy treatment)
What is the FTO gene/what allele is associated with increased food intake and reduced satiety response?
-Fat mass and obesity-related gene
-A allele
*May be more responsive to high-protein diets
