Modular Or Perfabricetd Construction Flashcards
What is modular construction?
It is the term used to describe the use of factory produced pre-engineered building units
What are the 6 main sectors of application for modular construction?
Private housing, social housing, educational sector and student residence, public sector buildings, health sector buildings, hotels
What are the 4 types of modules used in the design of buildings?
4-sided modules
opensided (corner supported) modules
modules supported by a primary structural frame
stair or lift modules
What are 4-sided modules?
4-sided modules are basic building blocks that have four closed sides or surfaces. They can be used to construct a variety of structures and objects by connecting several modules together
What is the usual approximate height of buildings with modules and what can they be manufactured with?
Height ranges of 6 to 10 stories, depending on location and exposure to wind action
With integral balconies and a range of cladding materials
What 2 things is the cellular space provided limited by?
Transportation and installation requirements
What are the 6 benefits of modular buildings?
Rapid installation
high level of quality control in factory production
suitable for projects with site constraints
Useful in building renovation projects
excellent acoustic/thermal insulation
adaptable for future extensions and ability to be dismantled easily removed if required
What are open-sided (corner-supported) modules?
Modules that have at least one side that is open or lacks a surface. These types of modules are often used for creating structures that require accessibility or visibility from one or multiple sides
What is the open-sided module framework is often formed of?
hotrolled steel members that are bolted together.
What are 2 examples of hotrolled steel members?
Square hollow section columns (SHS)
Parallel flange channel edge beams (PFC)
What can open-sided modules be placed side-by-side to create?
Modules can be placed side-by-side to create large open plan spaces
What does the stability of the building generally rely on? (Open-sided)
A separate bracing system in the form of X bracing
Because of the bracing system, fully open-ended modules are NOT often used for…?
Buildings more than 3 storeys high
What 2 things could be used to fill in the non-load bearing wall?
Infill walls and partitions within modules
Modular units are designed to be supported by a primary structure at what level?
A podium or platform level
