In 2013 the global aviation industry produced 705 million tonnes of CO2. Measures to reduce this include: avoid circling and queuing, adopt fuel efficient routes, have 100% seat occupancy, match the aircraft to the route, increase engine efficiency, improve aerodynamics and develop carbon capture in the engine. These must be treated with caution because many of these ideas are at the aspirational or theoretical stage.
