Modified Stuttering Approach Flashcards
Where is it used?
America
What is the aim?
For speakers to (a) recognise and accept and (b) modify their stutter into an intentional, smooth and less effortful form of stuttering (i.e. repetitions rather than prolongations).
What are the three phases?
- Identification
- Desensitisation
- Variation
Describe Identification
The client and the clinician collaborate to produce a list of surface and intrinsic features of their stutter.
Describe Desensitisation
By critically analysing their own stutter, the client is able to be distanced somewhat from the intrinsic features. They realise their stutter is understandable and normal. They may even use “voluntary stuttering”
Describe variation
The client realises that they are in CONTROL of their stutter, and therefore they can modify it. They first modify secondary behaviours, and then eventually PURPOSEFULLY do repetitions (rather than blocks). Then teaches client to RELEASE TENSION and REPEAT rather than BLOCK
