Modern Science Flashcards
What is Bioremediation?
Bioremediation is the use of micro-organism metabolism to remove pollutants.
Eg: Pseudomonas strains to clean up oil spills, bio leaching, etc.
What is Bioleaching?
Bioleaching is the extraction of metals from their ores through the use of living organisms. This is much cleaner than the traditional heap leaching using cyanide.
What is Phytoremediation?
Phytoremediation describes the treatment of environmental problems (bioremediation) through the use of plants that mitigate the environmental problem without the need to excavate the contaminant material and dispose of it elsewhere.
What is DNA Barcoding?
DNA barcoding is a taxonomic method that uses a short genetic marker in an organism’s DNA to identify it as belonging to a particular species.
What is absolute zero?
Absolute zero is the coldest possible temperature. More formally, it is the temperature at which entropy reaches its minimum value
What is SQUID?
A SQUID (for superconducting quantum interference device) is a very sensitive magnetometer used to measure extremely subtle magnetic fields, based on superconducting loops containing Josephson junctions.
