What happened at the Berlin Olympics? (5)

A
  • In 1936
  • Used by Hitler and the Nazi party as a stage for political propaganda
  • Ideology that Germany was a superior nation – wanted the games to be a showcase
  • Amateur ideal was stretched by the Germans, as the entire team trained full time in the lead up
  • Lutz Lang was the poster boy for the Aryan race, however, he was beaten by Jesse Owens an African American

What happened at the Mexico City Olympics (5)

A
  • In 1968
  • South Africa’s invitation to the games was withdrawn due to other countries threatening to boycott because of their apartheid regime
  • Tommie Smith and John Carlos – protested during the medal ceremony based on the lack of civil rights for black African Americans
  • The salute was said to represent unity and poverty.
  • They were told to leave the Olympics due to this

  • In 1972
  • 8 Palestinian terrorists entered the Olympic village and seized 11 members of the Israeli team
  • The terrorists wanted 234 Palestinians imprisoned in Israel released
  • Hostage rescue attempted BUT it failed: all hostages and 5 terrorists were killed

  • USA lead a boycott of the games in protest to the host country’s military invasion of Afghanistan.
  • More than 60 countries did not take part.

What happened at the Los Angeles olympics in 1984?

A
  • 12 weeks before the opening ceremony the following countries announced that they would be boycotting: Soviet Union, East Germany and other
  • In the end a total of 14 nations ended up not attending
  • The Soviet Union blamed the commercialisation of the games and a lack of security as the reason – stating that it violated the Olympic Charter

  • Created in 1894 by the Paris Congress
  • Owns all the rights to the Olympic symbols and the games.
  • It is the world body that administers the Olympic movement.
  • Members from each of the countries Olympic committees who are appointed to the IOC are responsible for selecting host cities.

  • The first Olympic style games for athletes with a disability were organised in Rome 1960,
  • Toronto 1976 – more disability groups were added, along with more sports.
  • The values based on history of games, fair play and honourable sports competition. They also instil similar values of the able bodied games.
