Modern Atomic Theory Flashcards
1
Q
Schrodinger’s equation
A
- a mathematical equation that describes the behavior of an electron in a hydrogen atom
- this helped form the quantum mechanical model
- DO NOT need to memorize for the test
2
Q
Quantum Mechanical Model
A
- the modern description of the behavior of electrons in atoms
- does not specify a path for electrons moving around the nucleus
- for each energy level, there is a region of space around the nucleus where there is a high chance of finding an electron
3
Q
Atomic orbital
A
- the probability of finding an electron at various locations
- usually represented by the region of space around the nucleus
4
Q
Shell Model
A
- a simplified version of the quantum mechanical model
- shell=level
- Principal energy shell is the closest to the nucleus and has the highest energy
5
Q
Shell model: subshell
A
- Each principal energy level has subshells: s,p,d,f
- Each orbital can hold 2 electrons
6
Q
S orbital
A
- Each energy shell has an S orbital
- spherical shape
- lowest energy orbital in each shell
7
Q
P orbital
A
- All subshells except for the first one have 3 p orbitals
- dumbbell shape
- have different orientations in space
- higher energy level that the S orbital
8
Q
D orbital
A
- 5 types of orbitals
- 4 of 5 d orbitals have a clover leaf shape
- higher energy orbital that s or p
9
Q
F orbital
A
- 7 types of orbitals
- complex shapes
-highest energy orbital
