Electromagnetic Spectrum Flashcards
Electromagnetic Radiation:
a type of energy that travels through space at a constant speed
Speed of light
3.00 x 10e8
Wavelength
- The distance between the crests of a wave
- It is measured in m, cm, or nm
- should always convert it to m.
Frequency
- the number of cycles that pass by a point in a given amount of time
- It is usually measured in Hz.
the wavelength, frequency, speed of light
c=λv
bohr’s model
- An inaccurate model that describes electrons moving in circular orbits around the nucleus
- Each orbit has fixed energy, AKA energy levels
- Electrons do not move in circular orbits around the nucleus, and this model doesn’t work for multi-electron atoms
Quantum
the amount of energy required to move an electron from one level to another. it is the minimum amount of energy that can either be lost or gained by an atom
energy, Planck’s constant, frequency
E= hv
Planck’s Constant
6.626 x 10e-34
E
- the energy of a quantum of radiation
- the unit is joules or J
directly proportional
-energy and frequency are directly proportional to wavelength
- Ex: shorter wavelength means higher energy and higher frequency (and vice versa)
when you have the energy and want to find the wavelength
hc/ λ
1.99 x 10e-25/ λ
Hydrogen emission spectra
- Bohr’s model only works for hydrogen atoms, as they only have one electron
ground state
the electron is in the lowest possible energy level
excited state
the electron gained energy and is in a higher energy level
