Models Of Memory Flashcards
Description of multi store model o memory
- information from our environment enters the sensory register via the 5 senses
- the sensory register acts as a filter only if attention is payed to the information it will be transferred to our STM
- our STM is were we are consciously aware of information but it is only temporary. Information will be held for 18-30 secs and only 7-/+ 2 items can be held at one time
- information must be attended to in the rehearsal loop to avoid decay or displacement so it will be transferred to our LTM for pernament storage
- information will need to be retrieved back to our short term store so it can be used again
What are the names of the 4 parts of the working memory model
Central executive
Phonological loop
Visuo spatial sketch pad
Episodic buffer
Hi
What is the central executive
Allocates recourse dependent on cognitive demands
It recalls specific items for conscious awareness but cannot dual task
Max 2 items at a tie (one from each store)
What is phonological loop
Temporary acoustic storage system for auditory and verbal information that we use to repeat information
Only lasts 2 secs
What are the two subsystems of the phonological loop
Phonological store
Articulatory store
What is the phonological store
Represents auditory information in terms of pitch and loudness (inner ear)
What is the articultory process
Holds words for sub vocal repetition to prevent decay (inner voice)
What is the visuo spatial sketchpad
Rehearses visual and or spatial information (inner eye)
Limited capacity
Divided into 2 sub groups- visual cache (visual information) and inner scribe (stores information and spatial relationships)
What is the episodic buffer
Sends all info to LTM
Bind all information from different sources into chunks
Recall material from LTM
