Models of Communication Flashcards
Models of Reality (MRs)
represent the structural relationship of communication systems visually
e.g. SMCDR model
MRs Key Features
-often pre-theoretical and heuristics in nature (device that helps us make sense of something)
-simplifying complex system to help us better understand and critique
What can MRs be used for (i.e. their value)?
- generating hypothesis
- guiding experimental designs
Models of Data (MDs)
constructed from empirical data using statistical techniques
MDs Key Features
-starts as hypotheses tested against data, often revised for a better fit
-uses computational tools to analyze patterns
MDs Limitations
-reliability depends on the quality of data
-risk of overfitting or chance-based conclusions
MRs vs MDs
MRs are often abstract, static, or generalized, used for understanding or generating ideas while MDs are more precise and data-driven and evolve with new evidence
Models of Possible Worlds (MPWs)
simulate systems or phenomena to observe behaviors in virtual or controlled environments, allowing us to test assumptions and explore dynamic processes
MPWs Benefits
ENACT & ENABLE
-enact communication process rather than just representing them
-enable exploration of complex interactions and emergent properties
