Models of Attention and Memory Flashcards
Social cues can be used to establish joint attention. Give 3 examples.
Prosody, gaze, gesture
What is Motherese/ Infant-Directed Speech (IDS)?
The way parents tend to talk to their children (repetitive, simplified grammar, exaggerated intonation)
How does Atkinson & SHriffin’s model work? What is the problem with it?
External input goes into the sensory register –> short-term memory –> long-term memory (via rehearsal)
The problem is that rehearsal does not always lead to learning, and learning can happen unintentionally.
What types of memory does the ACT* model specify?
Declarative memory - explicit; facts
Procedural - implicit; skills
What is metamemory?
We know that we used to know something but cant retrieve it at a specific moment
What’s the difference between ACT* and ACT-R?
ACT-R describes memory AND other cognitive processes
What does learning past-tense verb conjugation look like in children?
Hear adults use it & copy them (low error) –> notice patterns & generalize rule w/ out accounting for exceptions (high error) –> learn exceptions (low error)
U-shaped learning
