Model concepts Flashcards
Lecture 1: Chapter 1 & 2
1
Q
What are some important environmental problems where geochemical medelling is useful?
A
- High-level radioactive waste disposal
- Mining-related environmental issues
- Landfills
2
Q
What is the definition of a model?
A
A model is a abstract object described by a set of mathematical expressions and data, thought to represent natural processes in a particular system
3
Q
What is the difference between a model and a computer program?
A
A model is produced by a human being (modeller) aided by computer programmes
The term “computer code” is often used for the commands written in the computer programme/software
4
Q
What does the modeller do during the modelling process?
A
- Chooses what data to use
- Chooses what computer programme/ software to use
- Designs the model
- Verifies, calibrates and validates the model
- Selects the results that seem reasonable and rejects those that do not
5
Q
What are some “feedback scenarios” between processes?
A
- Chemical reactions
- Transport
- Biological processes
- Fluid flow
- Heat transport
