MODEL ANSWER THE BIOLOGICAL APPRCH Neurotransmitters Flashcards
THE BIOLOGICAL APPROACH
STATEMENT
an assumption of the biological approach is that behaviour is influenced by neurotransmitters
EXPLAIN(what is the nervous system)
the nervous system is made up of electrically exitable interlinked cells called neurons.
EXPLAIN(how do neutrons communicate)
neurons communicate using synaptic transmission
EXPLAIN(explain synaptic transmission)
an elctrical impulse travels down the axon of the pre synaptic neuron
when it reaches the axon terminals it triggers the presynaptic vesicles of the presynaptic neuron to release neurotransmitters
then they diffuse across the synapse until they reach specialised motor receptor cells at the dendrites of the post synaptic neuron then the process repeats
EXAMPLE (depression)
neurotransmitters in mental health e.g too little serotonin has been found in people with depression as it regulates mood appetite and sleep.some anti-depressants work by increasing levels of serotonin at post synaptic receptor sites.
EXAMPLE(schizophrenia)
furthermore high levels of dopamine have been associated with schizophrenia drugs that block dopamine activity have been found to reduce symptoms of schizophrenia
