Modality Definitions Flashcards
The most common type of massage—utilizes long, connective strokes incorporating light to medium pressure for a full body treatment session. This massage is generally relaxing.
Swedish
This technique is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle by addressing the deeper layer of tissue.
Massage Therapists gradually apply pressure using body weight, elbows and/or forearm. This can be painful and it is important to communicate with their therapist as they can always ease up. After care should consist of
drinking plenty of water and stretching.
Deep Tissue
Pressure applied to tender points on muscles and near muscle attachments. Points will feel like a knot or bump in the muscle and can form after injury or overuse.
Trigger point
Protocols designed to work with athletes for maintenance, preventative therapy, injury rehabilitation, and pre- and post-event recovery. Light stretching may be used throughout service.
Sports
A massage used to relieve tension, based on the theory that there are reflex points on the feet, hands.
Reflexology
Techniques designed to work with skeletal muscle immobility and pain by relaxing contracted muscles, improving blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulating the stretch reflex in muscles.
Myofascial Release
this massage, is a technique developed to help with lymphedema, an accumulation of fluid that can occur
after lymph nodes are removed during surgery, most often a mastectomy for breast cancer.
Lymphatic Drainage
A form of touch therapy that utilizes the principles of acupuncture and Chinese medicine. In acupressure, the same points on the body are used as in acupuncture, but are stimulated with finger pressure instead of with the
insertion of needles. used to relieve a variety of symptoms and pain.
Accupressure
massage uses light, gentle pressure on the head, neck, spine, and sacrum (or tailbone). Through soft
movements, obstructions and compressions in the areas where the brain and spinal cord function are released,
which is meant to allow the body to perform at a more optimal level.
Cranial Sacral
Offered only in a 90-minute session, this massage is designed to provide extreme relaxation. The therapist will massage with both their hands as well as stones. The heat from the stones allows the therapist to get deeper into the muscle without the use of deep pressure. Stones will be applied throughout the session on specific pressure points.
