Mod3-Obj2: Divisions of the NS Flashcards
The nervous system has to anatomical divisions
- ) Central nervous system (CNS)
2. ) Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
CNS
Consists of the brain and spinal cord
The CNS…
- Integration and command centre
1. ) Interprets, process and stores sensory input
2. ) Issues motor output - Control our emotions, behaviours and personality
- Performs intellectual function
- Stores memories
PNS
Consists of sensory receptors and peripheral nerves (cranial nerves and spinal nerves) that link all parts of the body to the CNS
The PNS has two functional divisions
- ) Sensory division
2. ) Motor division
PNS: Sensory division
Conveys sensory input from receptors to the CNS
PNS: Somatic sensory
Input originates from the skin, skeletal muscles and joints
PNS: Visceral sensory
Input originates from the visceral (abdominopelvic) organs
PNS: Special sensory
Input originates from eyes, ears, mouth and nose
PNS: Motor division
Conveys motor output from the CNS to an effector gland or muscle (skeletal, cardiac or smooth)
The Motor division of the PNS is divided into 2 subsystems
- ) Somatic nervous system
2. ) Autonomic nervous system
PNS, MOTOR DIVISION: Somatic nervous system
Conveys motor output to skeletal muscles only
PNS, MOTOR DIVISION: Somatic output produces:
- ) Voluntary muscle movements
2. Involuntary skeletal muscle movements=somatic reflexes
PNS, MOTOR DIVISION: Autonomic nervous system
Conveys motor output to cardiac muscle, smooth muscle and glands
PNS, MOTOR DIVISION: Autonomic output control involuntary responses such as
- Heart rate (cardiac muscles)
- Digestion (smooth muscle & glands)
- Urination
- Perspiration (sweat glands)
