Mod1-Obj 1: Levels of human structure Flashcards
Chemical level
- Atoms, tiny building blocks of matter, combine to form molecules
- Molecules combine to form macromolecules
Cellular level
- Molecules and macromolecules associate in specific ways to form organelles
- Organelles combine to form cells
- Cells are specialised to carry out particular functions, including essential for life functions
Tissue level
Tissues are group of similar cells that have a common function
- There are four basic tissue types
1. Epithelium
2. Muscle
3. Connective tissue
4. Nervous tissue
Epithelium tissue
Covers the body surface and lines its cavities
Muscle tissue
Provides movement
Connective tissue
Supports and protects body organs
Nervous tissue
Provides a means of rapid internal communication by transmitting electrical impulses
Organ level
An organ is a discrete structure composed of at least two tissue types that performs a specific function for the body
Organ system level
Organs that work together to accomplish a common purpose
Organisms are grouped into 11 organ systems, what are they?
- Cardiovascular system
- Integumentary system
- Skeletal system
- Muscular system
- Nervous system
- Endocrine system
- Lymphatic system
- Respiratory system
- Digestive system
- Urinary system
- Reproductive system
Organism level
Represents the sum total of all structural levels working together to keep us alive
