Name Functions
- Extract oxygen (O2) from the air and transfer it to the blood
- Excrete water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Maintain acid-base status of blood
- Ventilate the lungs

Average Respiratory Rates
These vary according to activity and health
•Average Adult
– 16 – 20 times per min.
•Infants and young children
– 24 – 40 times per min.
Will increase during:
Exercise, Fever, Shock and conditions affecting the normal functions of the lungs e.g. Pneumonia, bronchitis etc.
