Q

Koch’s postulates

A

Method of linking a set disease to a disease causing pathogen

  1. Organism present in diseased individual
  2. The microbes must be able to be isolated and grown in a pure culture
  3. Pure culture must induce disease when given to another individual
  4. The same microbes must be able to be isolated again and identified as the original species

Pasteurisation

In the 1860’s Louis Pasture conducted his experiement on the swan neck flask, disproving spontaneous generation- developing germ theory

Method

  1. Fill two swan neck glasses with nutrient
  2. Heat and bend one of the flask necks into a swan shape
  3. Boil broths to kill any microbes
  4. Leave for several days
  5. Examine the growth of bacteria in each flask
