If pt isn’t oxygenating well, first signs they will experience?
o agitation, restlessness, confusion, decrease LOC
o late signs are cyanosis
What is one thing you want to palpate for if pt. has chest trauma?
o sub q emphysema
o worry about airway and tension pneumothorax
o main thing is airway becoming occluded
How does body compensate for poor oxygenation? What will your vital signs do?
o increase RR, increase HR (circulate blood)—HGB carries oxygen
How can renal system affect your oxygen carrying capacity?
issue with kidneys can affect erythropoietin production which will affect production of RBC which will affect oxygen
What are some of the non-modifiable things that affects oxygenation?
o age, drugs (narcotics, depressants), COPD
What is one of the presenting signs of COPD?
o barrel chest, clubbing (late sign); tripod position; straight up in bed, leaning over tray
Why do pt. experience paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea?
HF; during day the edema is in the tissue and at night when they lay down, the fluid leaks into the vascular system on the right side and have wet lungs
If pt. has a sudden onset of cannot breathe?
PE; sudden onset
o maybe obstruction
If pt. climbs the stairs and gets SOB
o COPD; gradual onset
